Art Liberation Week: Storytelling: Who are you? Where are you from?

September 11, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

This event is only for people of colour/ BAME people/ people of the global majority. This event is family friendly.

About Althea (they/them)

I am Althea Sylvia Thomas-hall a black woman inspired by storytelling and provided by my ancestors and the abundance of the universe to tell and share stories at this stage in my life.

I feel I was de-educated to spend over 30 years in a finance career where the bottom line is ‘profit’. The source of some great stories. That world I think broke me and I embraced heritage, culture and the love of family/ tribe and other kindred spirits.

These stories are some of those I most love to tell and I consider there is a raging hunger for these stories in the world today with more diverse voices joining the growing vibration of healing words and sounds. I enjoy using stories and myths to redraw communities.

Sharing our own stories with courage is healing. We can only be accused of maybe sometimes… being too loud.

About the Workshop

What is your name? Who named you? Do you like it? Althea, Ronnie & Colin will be guiding you to explore your name and the family links that arise for you. The team will be taking you through storytelling exercises as well as showing a short film as an example.

Art Liberation Week

Art Liberation Week aims to decolonise art and creative practice. In practice this means that whatever your experience, you can create art. We strongly encourage you to try as many of the workshops as you can, push yourself out of your comfort zone and our wonderful facilitators will guide and care for you during this process.

The week offers an opportunity for people of colour in York to connect and build a supportive community; a space where we can freely express ourselves and experience joy.
