Art Liberation Week: Talking Objects
September 9, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
This event is only for people of colour/ BAME people/ people of the global majority. This event is suitable for 16+.
Amy completed a project exploring the migratory experiences of her family using objects as a tool to access and explore memories and stories. Quite often personal experiences are left out of the conversation when talking about large historical events, such as colonialism, and Amy hopes to change this through creative practice. Amy is an anti-racism consultant and facilitates workshops and courses that focus on healing from racial and intergenerational trauma. Amy is the Co-Coordinator of York Anti Racist Collective.
About the Workshop
For this workshop you’ll be asked to bring objects that mean something to you: they can be sentimental, objects that have been passed through generations or objects that you’ve recently acquired that you feel attached to in some way.
Amy will guide you to write an object biography: What is your object? When and where did you acquire the object? Why have you kept this object? Where do you keep this object? Has the function of the object changed over time?
With the group’s objects we will finish the session by creating a collective altar, a collection of objects displayed to show our collective identity.
Art Liberation Week
Art Liberation Week aims to decolonise art and creative practice. In practice this means that whatever your experience, you can create art. We strongly encourage you to try as many of the workshops as you can, push yourself out of your comfort zone and our wonderful facilitators will guide and care for you during this process.
The week offers an opportunity for people of colour in York to connect and build a supportive community; a space where we can freely express ourselves and experience joy.
For the Week’s events we are operating on a sliding scale. Please use the Green Bottle Sliding Scale Analogy to determine which price option works for you.
