Backlash & Social Movements

November 11, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 9:30 am

About this event

Within the last 5 – 10 years we have seen more visibility of trans folks in media, more Women & Women of Color in government, and large social justice movements. However this has been followed by the overturning of Roe v Wade, weaponizing of “Defund the Police”, fear mongering of “Critical Race theory”, and the filing of over and 240 anti-LGBTQ bills… (Deep breath) There is something about this moment that feels familiar. A pattern that we have lived over and over again, and that pattern is the backlash inevitably tied to social progress.

In order to make our way through this Backlash with our dignity and humanity intact, it’s first important that we shine a light on how it operates on both an interpersonal and structural level.

Join Robin Brown, Facilitator and Strategist at Future Work Design as she discusses the downward swing of the pendulum in the fight for equality and the strategies we can use to hold firm in the face of resistance.

Speaker Bio: Robin Brown (she/her/hers) is a Black, Trans, immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago, whose work is rooted in advocacy, equity, and justice. Through her arduous efforts of overcoming the barriers placed in organizations by institutional oppression was born a fierce passion for working toward dismantling it. Driving her is the idea that we can design an equitable work ecosystem that encompasses us all regardless of social identity. She is grounded in her purpose and from this root of strength transmits an expansive peacefulness. Her perspective has gifted her with the skill to connect individual experience with systemic design, and through the power of storytelling she provokes thought, emotion, and action toward institutional change. Robin builds deep connections in all the work she does, from connecting the dots as to why our work makes an impact, to creating meaningful connections with clients. Her way of building connections is quietly powerful. Clients love working with Robin because of her kindness, unique perspective, passion for the work, and ability to hold the discomfort that often comes with these difficult yet highly important conversations where so much is at stake.

Recognizing that ZOOM fatigue and flexible workstyles are a must, Zapproved in partnership with Cinder, created a thirty-minute morning program to highlight a member of the community to talk about their lived experiences with equity and inclusion.
