Centre for Language and Social Justice – Launch Event
October 4, 2019 @ 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm
In October this year, York St John University will be launching a new Centre for Language and Social Justice Research (LSJ) as a forum where scholars from linguistics and other disciplines can come together to engage in language-based research which aims to promote social justice.
The work of the Centre is premised upon the notion that social inequality and injustice is largely enacted through language. Therefore, to challenge and offer alternative language practices is a key means of effecting positive social change. LSJ aims to work for and with the communities who are intended to be the key beneficiaries of its activities. Language and social justice aligns with York St John University’s inclusive and socially transformative ethos and mission and reflects the history of the city of York with its community-focused philanthropic traditions. We see the Centre as contributing positively to the well-being of local communities in York and as engaging in collaborative activities with these communities.
The Centre staff would like to invite you to attend the LSJ launch event as York St John University at 5.45pm on Friday 4th October 2019
During the event, there will be opportunities to:
• learn about the activities of the Research Centre and the kind of work that they do;
• discuss how your organization might become involved in collaborating with LSJ on research projects and other initiatives;
• promote the work of your organization;
• meet other individuals and organizations in the York area who have a social justice orientation
Drinks and canapes will be provided.
The event is free to attend but, for catering purposes, we do require people to register for the event.
