Community Schools: Building Relationships in Classrooms with Social Justice

November 10, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

About this event

Educators across the country have been battling racist attacks on teaching and curriculum, and in Chicago they are working with community and students to make the curriculum process anti-racist and inclusive. For far too long, curriculum has fallen on the teacher to create or follow, and as part of the healing practices that are integral to the Sustainable Community Schools Initiative there has been a sought-after shift in the dynamics between learner and teacher.

This webinar picks up where our webinar on Building Successful Relationships through Family Engagement, Social Justice, & Equity leaves off. Join us to learn how classrooms have evolved in our Sustainable Community Schools and the impact on the relationships educators have with their students. During the webinar educators will present “curriculum circles,” using the Black Panther Party as a model and share the practices being used to create a safe environment where everyone has a say on what they are learning, learn together, and ensure that lessons have life-changing, real-world application. In this course we will give an overview on how to break molds that are not working, and move towards an anti-racist space where students, parents and community are engaged and have voice on what they learn and how they learn.

Available for one-hour of PD credit. A certificate of completion will be available for download at the end of your session that you can submit for your school’s or district’s approval.
