Does the Pink Pound have a History? Dr Justin Bengry

February 22, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

FREE but booking required

We are delighted to let you know that the LGBT+ staff network at Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) /Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT) have organised a free online webinar talk with Dr Justin Bengry to mark UK LGBT+ History Month.

In this talk based on a decade of research, Dr Justin Bengry uncovers more than a century of evidence that shows how business has been fascinated with ‘painted’ boys and ‘mannish’ women. Whether seeking to sell books to those with ‘Bulgarian Tendencies’ in the 1910s to publishing queer personal ads and decrying ‘Evil Men’ in the 1950s, we see that long before Pride Parades and glossy gay and lesbian lifestyle magazines, commerce and homosexuality were already well acquainted.

Dr Justin Bengry is Director of the Centre for Queer History at Goldsmiths, University of London where he heads the world’s first MA in Queer History.

The webinar is open to all with an interest in this subject.
