Human Rights – a Legacy of the Holocaust

June 24, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, developed as a response to the horrors of the Holocaust and co-drafted by our namesake, starts with the preamble ‘Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people…’

This talk will explore how the modern human rights framework evolved as a response to the horrors of the Holocaust. It will show how Jewish experience, Jewish values and, crucially, Jewish human rights heroes have helped influence and shape the modern human rights framework and its legacy for the future.

Presenter: Mia Hasenson-Gross, René Cassin’s Executive Director
