International Day of Persons with Disabilities – event planning meeting

September 3, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Since the autumn of 2016, we have worked with York Independent Living Network, York Explore and other organisations to develop awareness of Disability History Month (November to December) and the UN International Day for People with Disabilities (3rd December).

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. It aims to promote the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Building on many decades of UN’s work in the field of disability, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has further advanced the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

In York, last year there were several events around the city to mark this special day, under the banner of Disability Pride. This included a hugely popular cabaret at York St John, and a workshop on PIP (Personal Independence Payments). Planning is underway for this year’s event, and we would love to have some new additions to the planning team. Please join us on September 3rd at York Explore to join the discussion and get involved in the festivities.
