‘It’s all racialised on top’: Black and racially minoritised girls’ and women’s experiences of public sexual harassment
This event marks the formal launch of the report ‘It’s all racialised on top’: Black and racially minoritised girls’ and women’s experiences of public sexual harassment, written by researchers at the University of York and funded by Plan International UK. This is the first report on this issue in the UK.
The event will highlight the prevalence and forms of sexual harassment experienced by Black and minoritised women, as well as structural, institutional and cultural barriers to disclosure and help-seeking. Trust in the police, in school professionals, and in university systems is low. Stigma within communities makes talking about the impacts of sexual harassment difficult. The research shows that sexual harassment impacts on Black and minoritised girls’ and women’s feelings of safety, their mental health, and freedom to move around in public spaces.
We will be joined by representatives from the police, survivor organisations, activist-survivors, and Plan International to discuss the policy and practice ramifications of this research.
This event will be followed by a drinks reception.
