VCSE Training: An Introduction to Disability and Disability Rights
March 27 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pmfree
About this event
This training session will provide an introduction to Disability and Disability Rights for charities, social enterprises and community organisations (service providers and service users).
Disability is more common than you might think. You probably have at least one disabled relative. You may have disabled friends. You may be disabled yourself and if not, you will almost certainly become so if you live long enough.
You may have felt uncomfortable around disabled people, unsure how to treat us and curious about us. You may know a lot about one disability but not much about disability in general. Some disability issues are complex, but the basics are fairly simple and if they were more widely known and better understood life would be better not just for disabled people but for society at large.
Areas covered include:
- Nature and prevalence of disability in York
- Attitudes to disability
- Models of disability
- Legal requirements in relation to disability
- Aspects of disabled people’s experience
By the end of the session you may be starting to question your assumptions and change the way you relate to disabled people and provide services for them.
About the facilitator:
Local group, York Disability Rights Forum are led by disabled people and work to promote equal access to human rights for all disabled people who live or work in York.
This training is supported by The National Lottery Community Fund. For more information about this training, please contact Jane Granville, Funding and Development Officer, York CVS on: email@example.com.
