Speaker: Dr Peter Morrall, Centre for Lifelong Learning
The world is in a mess. Some of that mess manifests madness. However, there is an increasing focus on the individual for the root and remedying of psychological problems. Such individualisation is related directly to the centuries-old process of medicalising madness. However, the later-day resurgence of biological (and to a lesser extent, psychological) explanations of, and concomitant treatments for, brain/mind assumed dysfunction, has further narrowed and intensified the ‘clinical gaze’. Whilst not discounting individual ‘faults’, societal ‘faults’ such as poverty, inequality, financial crises, armed conflict including terrorism, ecological disaster, and rampant consumerism, have indirect and direct impact on mental health.
Other lectures in this series include:
- From poetic justice to narrative justice
- Contemporary art from the Arab world and Iran
- Saints, sanctity and theologies of healing
