Front Line Defenders, together with UCD School of Politics & International Relations (SPIRE), presents a conversation with Professor Alex Dukalskis about his book ‘Making the World Safe for Dictatorship’, which looks at how authoritarian states manage their image abroad using both “promotional” tactics of persuasion and “obstructive” tactics of repression. At a time when nationalist-oriented populist political movements are on the ascent, fuelled by and spread through social media platforms and cable/satellite news outlets promoting specific agendas, the threat of authoritarian regimes to silence dissent and eliminate critics is perhaps greater than ever.

Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), who are on the frontlines of defending and advancing the rights of their communities; challenging political and economic corruption; and documenting and reporting abuses are often the targets of authoritarian rulers because the HRDs challenge their power. The analysis Alex brings forth helps us understand the tactics these regimes use and how they are deployed both inside their countries and externally to maintain control and carve out space by which they can operate internationally.

Alex will be interviewed by journalist Peter Goff and joined by Front Line Defenders Deputy Director Olive Moore for a wider discussion that will explore the intersection of how authoritarian states manage their image abroad while carrying out repression at home, with a particular focus on the implications for Human Rights Defenders.
