About this event

Peace and security in the 21st Century: Changing international relations and the view from the Global South

Hosted by the Department of Politics, York Centre for Conflict and Security and the York Indonesian Society

At this critical juncture in global politics, with realignments between the major powers at a time of shared global crises, new spaces are opening for rising powers to play leading roles in security and peace. However, much remains to be understood about the driving interests of the largest states from the global South as they respond to changing security threats and shifting conflicts, about the forces that shape their regional and international responses, and the kinds of roles the new players seek on the global stage.

This lecture provides a unique opportunity to hear from a senior diplomat from Indonesia – the world’s 3rd largest democracy, 4th most populous country, and 10th largest economy – now at the helm of the G20. With decades of diplomatic experience at the highest levels of global politics, our guest lecturer promises to open our eyes to some of the challenges and opportunities faced by one of the world’s rising powers.

The University of York and Indonesia have a strong history of collaboration across multiple facilities and disciplines. We have a growing Indonesian student population that has expanded since the pandemic, and York is committed to developing the relationship between our two countries. The lecture will give attendees the chance to connect with Indonesia and York’s Indonesian Society through art, culture and new insights.
