People living in poverty often face additional barriers to participating in important experiences, such as school, healthcare, and cultural and community activities.

In the UK, approximately 20% of all people – and 30% of children – live in poverty. That’s an average of 9 children in every classroom of 30.

Recognised nationally, Poverty Proofing© is a unique model created by Children North East which aims to address the structural inequalities in systems and organisations that impact those facing financial hardship. This powerful tool helps us look at the experience through the lens of those affected by poverty and to address and make recommendations on practice and policy to enable equal access to systems and organisations.

This webinar is aimed at anyone that works within education. Please help us spread the word by sharing this with your colleagues and network.

Poverty Proofing© – What is it all about?

Recognised nationally, Poverty Proofing© is a unique model created by Children North East which aims to address the structural inequalities in systems and organisations that impact those facing financial hardship. The principle is to look at the experience through the lens of those affected by poverty, and to address and make recommendations on practice and policy to enable equal access to systems and organisations.

Since 2014 we have been working with schools through our Poverty Proofing© the School Day programme, a powerful tool for identifying the barriers children living in poverty face, engaging fully with school life and its opportunities. Poverty Proofing© focuses on listening to the voices and experiences of young people, and offers a pathway for schools to address often unseen inequalities within their activities. This helps them reduce stigma, break the link between educational attainment and financial background, and supports schools to explore the most effective way to spend Pupil Premium.

Focused on listening to the voices and experiences of young people, Poverty Proofing© offers a nationally-recognised pathway for schools, healthcare and cultural providers to address unseen inequalities within their activities.
