Millennium Fields Volunteer Day

November 10, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Fishergate side of Millennium Bridge, Bottom of Maple Grove
York, YO10 4EH

Join us at Millennium Fields to help maintain and improve this award winning grassland site. We’ll be doing various tasks on the grassland and small woodland to maintain and improve these areas for both wildlife and people. This month we’ll be working in the woodland behind the meadow. We're going to do some thinning, coppicing, and pruning to rejuvenate some of the trees and encourage trees to regrow to make elaborate multi-stemmed structures – perfect for low nesting birds! Any age and ability welcome. Under 13s must be accompanied by an adult and 13-17 year olds need parental consent. Free entry. These sessions are supported by the Growing Green Spaces fund. Growing Green Spaces is a small grants programme funded by City of York Council and managed by York CVS.

York, YO1 9TL

£5 – £10

There will be a screening of the film 'Afghan Star' at the National Centre for Early Music on Sunday 10 November at 7.30pm. The film focusses on 4 finalists, two men and two women, in the Afghan TV show Afghan Star, all of whom come from different ethnic groups. Modelled on Pop Idol, the final is watched by a third of the population who, in an early exercise in democracy, vote by SMS. An important exploration of modern culture in Afghanistan, the film received two awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and a Prix Italia. Afghan composer and musician Qais Essar will lead a post-screening discussion. Read more about it here: https://tickets.ncem.co.uk/en-GB/shows/afghan%20star/events.
