Foot Work: What your shoes are doing to the world

June 6 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Online

Do you know where your shoes come from? Do you know where they go when you’re done with them? In 2018, 66.3 million pairs of shoes were manufactured across the world every single day. They have never been cheaper to buy, and we have never been more convinced that we need to buy them. Yet their cost to the planet has never been greater. Tansy E Hoskins, author of Foot Work: What Your Shoes Are Doing to the World, takes us deep into the heart of the industry, revealing how it is exploiting workers and deceiving consumers. Find out why, if we don't act fast, this humble household object will take us to the point of no return. About the speaker Tansy E Hoskins is the award-winning author of Stitched Up: The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashion and Foot Work: What Your Shoes Are Doing to the World. She can also be found working as a journalist writing about the textile, clothing and footwear industries for the Guardian, Al Jazeera, i-D, and the iPaper. This work has taken her to Bangladesh, Kenya, Macedonia and to the Topshop warehouses in Solihull. You can find her online at tansyhoskins.org or Twitter.com/tansyhoskins or Instagram.com/tansyhoskins. Book sales You can buy copies of many of our speakers’ books from Fox Lane Books, a local independent bookseller and Festival partner.  In some cases, author signed bookplates are available too.

Creating a post-Covid Neighbourhood

June 6 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Online

Description Join community developer Yorspace for a fun online workshop imagining and designing a co-owned carbon-neutral neighbourhood. Using York Central as an example, aim high and create something bold and attractive – not just an idea but a real alternative to how a neighbourhood is designed and used. Help us build back better after Covid 19, creating a future York for all of us, regardless of age. Early booking advised as places are limited. Yorspace & YoCo Yorspace is a York-based Community Land Trust set up six years ago to develop forever affordable, low carbon communities across the city. Its first development, Lowfield Green in Acomb, will provide 19 new homes and a common house for local people who cannot afford to get onto the housing ladder. The development is starting on site this year and will be ready in 2021. Find out more at yorspace.org. Yorspace is working with https://www.yoco.uk/ - a community project designing a co-owned neighbourhood on part of York Central.
